I’ve always thought that if my life had a theme song, it would go something along the lines of, “just a mess in a dress doing my best”. Of course, Taylor Swift would sing the lead vocals and there would be an epic trumpet solo leading into a grand finale filled with confetti and extremely enthusiastic jazz hands. That would be ideal.
Unfortunately, real life doesn’t include perfectly timed musical soundtracks or flawless choreography, which is, honestly, a total bummer. However, it does include a lot of messes.
And a lot of lemons.
I like to tell myself that messes keep things interesting. They help with the whole “learn from your mistakes” thing. But, sometimes I feel like I might make too many mistakes. I get afraid that I’m messing up so much, that I leave absolutely no room for anything to actually go right. So then I try to remind myself about the whole “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” thing. But, this usually results in me staring longingly at all of the people who seem to be conquering life perfectly with one hand and sipping on sweet lemonade with the other.
And then there’s me. The mess in the dress…with a whole lot of lemons.
But, here’s the thing. I think this cliché about lemons and lemonade is a bit too over simplified. Of course, I would love to just snap my fingers and have an ice cold lemonade magically appear in my hand. That would be grand. But, we often forget that making lemonade is hard work. There’s a lot of cutting and squeezing to be done. There’s a lot of juice and sugar and water to deal with. There’s a lot of measuring and pouring and stirring. And there are a lot of messes to be made.
The process of getting from lemon to lemonade is really just one big, gigantic mess. All of those people sipping away on their citrus drinks were at one point covered head to toe in lemon juice just like the rest of us. So remember this: When life gives you lemons…you might have to work really hard, you may feel a little over your head at times, and you most likely will create a giant mess, but you are going to end up with the best tasting lemonade in the whole darn world.
